Sleep Dramatically Impacts Your Weight

I’m re-posting this important medical study I blogged about last year, because it came up during an interview that I just gave on BlogTalkRadio two weeks ago… …and I realized that so many folks still don’t know how dramatically lack of sleep can affect weight!     A study published in SLEEP last July found that folks gained a significant amount of weight after only 5 days of poor sleep.   Previous studies have shown a link between poor sleep and weight gain, but this is the first study where participants slept in-house in a sleep facility and the …

Pesticide Exposure and Autism

There is ample proof to show that pesticides are contributing to the steep rise of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and developmental delay (DD.)   The latest study was published a few weeks ago on June 23, 2014 in Environmental Health Perspectives.   This study specifically links prenatal exposure of organophosphates (the most commonly applied agricultural pesticide) and other commonly used pesticides to autism rates in offspring.   Pesticides are neurotoxins that are clearly having a known, predictable and permanent effect on the developing fetal neurology during gestation. This particular study looked at northern CA residents (the state of CA alone …

Coffee Decreases Your Risk of Diabetes

Published 3 months ago (April 2014) in Diabetologia, a new study found that drinking more coffee can dramatically decrease your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.   This was a huge longitudinal study, looking at whether increasing or decreasing your coffee or tea intake changed the subsequent rate of type 2 diabetes development. Turns out, the answer is yes!   Although several large studies have previously shown that coffee drinkers have lower rates of diabetes, this study was novel in that it followed large cohorts of people who changed their coffee or tea intake, and then followed their actual diabetes …

Probiotics An Alternative To Antidepressants

A new study, published on Nov 15, 2013 in Biological Psychiatry, shows that probiotics might be more aptly named psychobiotics for their mind and mood enhancing effects.   The latest statistics estimate that about one in every ten Americans now takes an antidepressant, and antidepressants are the third most prescribed form of medication.   Whether because of personal preference, unwanted side effects, cost or other reasons, there are many folks looking for alternative, holistic solutions to treating depression and anxiety.
