Your Outlook Can Literally Speed Brain Decline (and 9 ways to stop it)

Recently, several important medical studies have come to light proving that your outlook literally changes the function of your brain. Specifically, medical research shows that: cynicism increases dementia and neuroticism increases Alzheimers.   This is really surreal for me, because as some of my longer term readers might remember, almost 4 YEARS AGO I blogged about an intuitive dream I had, one where I understood how thinking and brain structure are connected…   …I even ended that blog post asking: “Do you think in the future we will have studies that back up our thoughts being able to effect lasting …

Evidence That Pesticides Increase Alzheimers Risk

New evidence shows that having measurable levels of pesticide metabolites in your blood increases your risk of Alzheimer’s disease by 400%.   Published on January 27, 2014 in JAMA Neurology, a new study shows that high levels of DDE (a metabolic by-product of notorious pesticide DDT) in the body was found to cause a 4-fold increase in Alzheimers Disease risk. This study confirms that if there are serum levels of DDE in your blood (from pesticide exposure) this is crossing your blood-brain barrier and directly affecting your brain.   Even though DDT was banned in the United States in 1972, …

Caffeine — Best Study Aid Ever?

Last week, I shared with you the news of the recently found heart protective quality of caffeine. Caffeine appears to have an enhancing effect on memory consolidation as well, suggests a study published right on the heels of last week’s study.     Published on January 12, 2014 in Nature Neuroscience, caffeine was shown to have an immediate boost on memory. 140 participants of this study were able to remember and recall images that they were shown 24 hours later better if they were consuming caffeine while looking at the initial image. Sleep Deprivation Found To Increase Weight After Only A Few Days

A new study, recently published in SLEEP last month (July 2013) found that folks gained a significant amount of weight after only 5 days of poor sleep.   Previous studies have shown a link between poor sleep and weight gain, but this is the first study where participants slept in-house in a sleep facility and the actual weight gain was measurably significant after only a handful of 4 hour nights in a row. Here are the study details: Researchers took 225 healthy adults with no history of sleep problems. Half of the participants had time in bed from 10 …

Poor Sleep Linked to Alzheimers: 9 Ways To Fix It.

For ages and ages, human beings followed the rhythm of the sun… going to sleep when the sun went down and rising with the sun in the morning. Our circadian rhythm was in concert with the earth and ensured that we got deep, restorative sleep in order to face the next day.   These days, artificial lighting and long work days mean that most people (myself included!) have some sort of sleep abnormality and/or circadian rhythm disruption. Although we know that lack of sleep causes everything from memory problems, fatigue, decreased concentration, stress, and increased food cravings, a recent study …

Prevent dementia AND reduce skin cancer? Yep. Here’s how…

There is one thing you can drink every single day (multiple times a day) that has now been proven to not only prevent dementia but also reduce your skin cancer risk. It’s lovely. It’s warm. It’s invigorating. It’s coffee! Now, I know caffeinated coffee is addictive and I can say for sure I don’t feel my best when I am in a cycle of “needing” coffee to wake me up each morning. However, let me tell you about two recently released medical studies that show the encouraging results of drinking caffeinated coffee every day and you can decide how you …
